How to Elope: A Step-by-Step Guide to Your Intimate Wedding Day

Eloping is a magical way to celebrate your love story in a deeply personal and meaningful way. Whether you’re dreaming of a mountaintop ceremony, a forest retreat, or a beachfront vow exchange, this guide will walk you through the essential steps on how to elope and how to plan your perfect day.

1. Define Your Elopement Vision

Your elopement is about YOU. Start by imagining what your ideal day looks like:

  • Location: Do you picture saying your vows in the mountains of North Carolina or Tennessee, on the sandy beaches of Alabama, or under a canopy of tall pines in Georgia? Maybe it’s somewhere you’ve never been or where you want to visit to explore?
  • Season: Choose a time of year that complements your destination, whether it’s fall foliage or spring blooms. Think of the weather as well and the sunset/sunrise times of the location. (…like Alaska gets 6 hours of daylight in parts of the year!)
  • Style: Will it be adventurous and outdoorsy or cozy and elegant? Knowing your vibe helps shape the rest of your plans.

2. Set Your Budget

Elopements can be budget-friendly, but it’s important to prioritize:

  • Photography: Hiring an experienced elopement photographer ensures your memories are captured beautifully. This will more than likely be your “splurge” moment. Your photographer (aka me) will not only “take beautiful pics” but will guide you through the whole process- start to finish. I will help plan the activities you love, curate a timeline for you, and ensure your having the best day ever and enjoying the moment. It’s a planner-photographer-coordinator all in one kind of deal.
  • Travel and Lodging: Factor in airfare, car rentals, and accommodations near your destination.
  • Attire and Details: From your outfits to flowers and rings, allocate funds for the items that matter most.

3. Choose Your Vendors

Elopements often involve fewer vendors than traditional weddings, but the right ones can make all the difference:

  • Photographer: Look for someone who specializes in elopements and knows your chosen location well. I help couples that don’t know how to elope by helping you plan the perfect day around what you both want and need. Every couple is different which means every elopement should be unique.
  • Officiant: Decide whether you’d like a professional or a loved one to officiate your ceremony. This also depends on the requirements in the state you want to elope in. No fear though, that is something I also help research for you as well after booking!
  • Florist: A simple bouquet and boutonniere can add a beautiful touch to your day (I know some great recommendations).

4. Research Legal Requirements

Every location has its own rules for marriage and how to elope legally, so check the following:

  • Marriage License: Find out where to obtain one and what identification or documents you’ll need.
  • Witnesses and Officiants: Some states, like Tennessee, require witnesses, while others may allow a friend to officiate your ceremony.
  • Permits: If you’re eloping on public land like a national park, you will more than likely need permits for events and for photography. The awesome thing is…I help you secure those once you’re booked! It’s just one less thing you have to worry about!

5. Plan the Details

Now that you’ve set the foundation, it’s time to nail down the specifics:

  • Timeline: Plan your day’s schedule, from getting ready to the golden-hour ceremony with the detailed timeline for you to go by.
  • Travel Plans: Book flights, rental cars, and accommodations well in advance.
  • Ceremony Location: Scout the exact spot for your vows—whether it’s a scenic overlook, a forest clearing, or a secluded beach.

(PS. These are some things that I offer in every elopement at no extra cost to you!!)

6. Make It Personal

This is your day, so make it uniquely yours:

  • Write Your Vows: This is the perfect opportunity to share your deepest and most sincere thoughts together. Having that privacy together is what eloping is all about.
  • Include Traditions You Love: Whether it’s a first dance or a special reading, include elements that feel meaningful. You can also include activities in your elopement like helicopter tours, a sunset sailboat cruise, or even a hike in the woods. Doing something new together can be exciting and rewarding all at the same time.
  • Plan a Celebration: After your ceremony, consider a private picnic, dinner at a local restaurant, or even a campfire under the stars. Whether you have guests with you or not, the dinner afterwards is just as important!….and the cake! Who says you can’t have the best day adventuring AND have some wedding cake after?

7. Capture the Moment

Photos and videos are the best way to relive your day for years to come. Hire a photographer who specializes in elopements and understands your vision( AKA ME!) I can help you choose the best time and lighting for unforgettable shots.

8. Share the News

Eloping doesn’t mean you have to say no to guests, you can still celebrate with loved ones:

  • Announce Your Marriage: Send out announcements or post on social media to share your happy news. You can even share a small video with them or surprise them when you’re back.
  • Host a Reception: Plan a small gathering later to celebrate with family and friends. You can do this at your elopement if you wanted to-think backyard dinner all together. There’s always the option of having a larger gettogether once you are back home as well.

9. Enjoy Every Moment

Eloping allows you to focus on what truly matters: your love for one another. Take time to savor the experience and enjoy the adventure.

Popular Locations for Eloping in the Southeast:

  • Mount Cheaha, Alabama: Stunning mountain views and intimate settings.
  • Smoky Mountains, Tennessee: Perfect for adventure lovers.
  • Savannah, Georgia: Romantic charm with historic backdrops.

Whether you’re dreaming of an Alabama elopement, a mountaintop ceremony in Tennessee, or a woodland escape in Georgia, this how to elope guide is your roadmap to a stress-free and unforgettable day. Now, start planning your adventure!
